Amazon vs. Walmart Marketplace: Which One Should You Sell On First?

Back to Blog

Amazon and Walmart Marketplace are the two giants of US online retail, and which one to start with is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer is that it depends on your product, margins, and appetite for competition.

Reach versus competition

Amazon has the larger audience and higher purchase intent, but also brutal competition and rising fees. Walmart has a smaller, yet rapidly growing audience with noticeably less seller saturation, which can mean easier visibility for new listings.

Fulfillment

Both offer first-party logistics: Amazon FBA and Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS). WFS is newer but competitive on cost, and Walmart rewards sellers who use it with better Buy Box performance.

  • Choose Amazon first if your category has proven demand and you can compete on reviews and PPC.
  • Choose Walmart first if you want lower competition, strong margins, and room to own a category early.

Or do both

Many of our clients list on both and sync inventory between FBA and WFS. Diversifying channels reduces risk and captures buyers who shop exclusively on one platform.
